Satyamev Jayate

I’m  absolutely  overwhelmed  with  Aamir  Khan’s  program  today.  And overwhelmed is probably too bland a word for the moment.

Yes,  I  had  read  a  few  interviews  about  it  and  had  smiled  at  the  buzz  surrounding  it,  thinking  of  it  as  “yet  another”  celebrity  drama.  So  at  the  scheduled  show  time  of  11  am,  I  chose  to  ignore  it  and  continued  to  savour    the  Times  of  India.  After  many  months,  I  found  I  could  spend  2  hours  on  the  Sunday  paper  again  and  relished  the  almost  forgotten  experience.

It  was  late  afternoon  when  hubby  got  a  few  calls  asking  if  he’d  seen  the  programme.  From  friends  who  could  be  relied  on  to  actually  recommend  good  programs  unlike  some  who  end  up  recommending  each    and  every  film  they  see.  I  think  that’s  happens  for  2  reasons.  Partly  because  of  a  sadistic  streak;  why  should  others  not  go  through  what  I’ve  gone  through  !  And  secondly,  for  a  lot  of  people,  anything  on  a  70  mm  screen  always  looks  good.

But  coming  back  to  today.  I  was  watching  Chupke  Chupke  (Dharmendra,  Sharmila  Tagore, Amitabh & Jaya).  The  unhurried  life  style,  big  house,  the  driveway,  the  portico,  garden  or  lawn  whatever  you  choose  to  call  it,full  time  gardeners  tending  over  flowers  and  pulling  out  obstinate  weeds  from  the  roots,  the  “outhouse”  and  other  such  small  accommodation  housing  the  important  domestic  staff.  Morning  tea  in  the  garden  a  9  am  and  using  a  full  tea  set,  including  the  “tea  cozy”  which  we  were  forced  to  make  as  part  of  our  SUPW  project  in  school  back  in  the  eighties.    Yes,  personally,  a  green  tea  dip  in  a  cup  of  boiling  water  is  all  the  pains  I  will  take  with  my  tea  but  nevertheless,  watching  the  unhurried  process  of  drinking  a  simple  cuppa  in  such  a  regal  manner  still  gives  so  much  pleasure.  And  then  the  Ambassador  slowly  making  it  way  to  office  through  broad  streets  in  a  maximum  time  frame  of  half  an  hour,  irrespective  of  the  distance.  And  then  return  from  the  office  at  5.30  pm  sharp,  a  change  into  a  set  of  casual  clothes  and  stroll  into  the  club  for  a  round  of  badminton  !  No  fear  of  the  boss  calling  up  for  an  urgent  report  after  office  hours  and  hence  no  need  to  hold  onto  the  cellphone  like  a  revered  Gita,  wondering  when  it  will  ring  !

But  more  than  all  this,  what  I’m  missing  today  is  the  honesty,  the  integrity  of  the  people  from  that  era.  When  lies  and  misstatementswere  unknown.  When  there  was  so  much  value  on  the  word  of  a  person.  I  could  identify  and  relate  to  people  like  Om  Prakash  (who  played  the  famous  Jijaji  )and  David  with  my  dad  and  other  senior  family  members.  The  way  they  considered  each  and  every  issue  from  the  supreme  standpoint  of  simply  right  or  wrong  with  no  further  connotations.  And  this  came  with  a  lot  of  patience.  The  ability  to  see  and  understand  the  other’s  viewpoint.  Demonstration  of  patience  with  others  showed  the  respect  whilst  patience  and  belief  in  God’s  ways  showed  the  faith.  And  patience  with  one’s  own  self  came  the  self  respect.  With  the  passion  for  truth  and  correctness  reigning  supreme.

Why  this  prologue?  Because  whilst  flipping  channels  during  the  ad  breaks  of  Chupke  Chupke,  I  came  across  the  repeat  telecast  of  Satyamev  Jayate  on  Star  Utsav.  And  then  I  got  to  see  that  PASSION  again.  In  Aamir’s  voice,  his  expressions,  in  the  people  who  came  in,  in  the  videos  he  showed,  everything.  Without  Aamir  raising  his  voice  even  once.  There  was  such  a  big  difference  between    “We  the  People”  and  other  such  shows.  There  is  definitely  a  dramatic  element  involved  in  those..,  voices  rising  in  a  crescendo  in  the  climax  of  the  show.Whereas  Aamir’s  whole  show  was  a  climax.  And  without  the  drama.

I’ve  heard  he’s  given  up  on  all  endorsements  as  he  wants  to  be  connected  only  with  this  show.  He’s  missed  out  on  big  money  which  he  could  have  made  during  the  ongoing  IPL.  But  being  the  perfectionist  he  is,  he  chose  social responsibility  for  a  cause  over  money.

For  people  who’ve  still  not  watched  it  (trust  me,  it’s  a  crime),  Aamir  has  brough  out  the  age  old  issue  of  female  foeticide  and  explained  and  related  so  many  related  concepts.

Why  did  it  all  start?  Because  apparently  premier  government  medical  institutions  in  the  country  came  out  with  a  paper  in  the  70’s  that  the  increasing  population  of  the  country  was  on  account  of  people  having  more  and  more  babies  to  realize  their  dream/  ambition  of  having  sons;  to  carry  on  the  family  name.  So  if  such  couples  had  female  children,  they  continued  to  try  their  luck  until  male  children  were  born.  And  hence  the  research  paper  advocated  use  of  sex  determination  tests  as  a  population  control  measure  !

And  then  we  heard  horrific  real  life  stories.  When  one  lady  said  that  her  mother  in  law  (an  educated  lady  retired  as  Vice  Principal  from  a  school)  kicked  a  baby  pram  down  the  stairs  which  had  a    new  born  baby  girl  inside  it  at  that  time,  further    supported  by  a  Professor  father  in  law  and  a  Surgeon  husband  !  I  used  to  be  complacent  saying  this  kind  of  stuff  only  happened  in  rural  areas  and  never  amongst  educated  people.  That  real  life  story  was  a  slap  on  my  face.  This  matter  is  now  sub  judice.  The  lawyer  for  this  mother  further  said  that  the  sitting  judge  had  asked  in  open  court  what  was  the  problem    if  her  family  wanted  male  children?  That  was  supposedly  a  very  normal  demand  !

We  were  shown  the  details  of  a  sting  operations  done  on  doctors  advocating  female  foeticide  in  Jaipur  and  across  Rajasthan.    We  saw  Doctors  saying  that  if  the  female  child  comes  out  alive,  cremate  her  alive  !  And  inspite  of  all  this  happening  7  years  ago,  inspite  of  having  documented  proof,  all  the  doctors  shown  in  the  sting  are  all  openly  practicing.  And  the  flip  side?  The  journalists  who  carried  out  this  sting  operation  at  great  risk  are  now  being  made  to  run  across  different  courts  in  Rajasthan  to  give  evidence  and  have  even  received  death  threats.

Where  is  all  this  leading  to?  A  big  screwup  in  the  male  female  ratio  in  the  country  with  boys  far  outnumbering  girls  in  many  places.  And  then  we  were  introduced  to  groups  of  35  plus  boys  in  Haryana  who  were  sill  unmarried  as  there  were  no  girls  available!  Same  story  in  Rajasthan  also.  And  how  is  this  issue  sorted  out?  By  “buying”  girls  from  different  regions  for  marriage.  And  then  the  same  girl  has  to  satisfy  the  physical  needs  of  all  brothers  in  that  house  as  for  one,  she  doesn’t  have  any  self  respect  as  she’s  been  bought  and  two,  financial  inability  to  buy  more  brides.  Where  is  the  respect  for  the  girl  going  in  our  “mother”land? What  will  be  the  status  of  the  woman  once  this  issue  goes  out  of  hand?

But  this  is  not  where  Aamir  left  us.  He  did  not  do  this  show  just  to  “espouse”  a  social  cause  and  then  forget  about  it.  He  actually  had  solutions  and  showed  us  one  bright  side  too.  About  how  one  strict  policeman  in  the  small  town  of  Nawanshahr  in  Punjab  managed  to  terrorise  doctors  into  stopping  sex  determination  tests  and  today  the  town  boasts  of  a  100  girls  to  a  100  boyss.  So  even  one  person  can  make  a  difference.

And  what  is  way  ahead  for  the  rest  of  the  country?  To  start  with,  Aamir  Khan  will  write  a  letter  to  the  Rajasthan  Government  asking  for  all  cases  against  the  doctors  identified  in  the  sting  operation,  currently  languishing  in  different  courts  to  be  transferred  to    a  single  fast  track  court.  Fast  and  correct  judgement  and  the  correct  punishment  will  deter  others.  Yes,  punishment  of  the  guilty  is  necessary  to  get  everyone  to  move  on  the  correct  track.  It  is  now  the  fear  factor  which  will  work  on  an  immediate  basis.  Only  when  people  move  on  the  correct  track  for  many  years,  that  is  when  these  incorrect  thought  processes  will  gradually  get  obliterated  from  the  mind.  At  this  stage,  after  hearing  the  horrific  stories  from  so  called  educated  households,  only  appealing  to  the  good  sense  of  people  will  not  help.

It  was  a  show  with  a  difference.  Passion  can  make  a  difference.  Like  we  applaud  you  for  coming  out  with  a  masterpiece  film  after  working  relentlessly  on  it  for  a  long  long  period,  this  one  too  was  worth  the  wait.  We  hear  so  many  stories  of  how  Aamir  actually  gets  into  the  directors’  seat  on  every  film  and  unsettles  him;  meddles  in  his  work  and  constantly  interferes  in  the  editing  etc,  all  of  it  is  just  explained  by  one  word  :  PASSION.  To  finally  bring  out  and  showcase  the  BEST.

Thank  you  Aamir  for  using  your  passion  this  this  kind  of  a  cause  and  actually  start  to  contribute  to  India  Shining  !  There  are  many  of  us  with  you.

Bravo  !

Lalitha.....You bought me with your article... literally bought me darling... . you are commiting a great crime if you are not writing .. i mean writing anything..in general for public. i am sure you would have no problem publishing.. magazine, newspaper, novel.. anything.. I have not seen Amir's show but I will as you have made it a must now... do you actually konw how well you have written the above?? the impact of it.. i am sure the only one which will compete with it would be Amir's show itself.(of which i am doubtful)...

  9. Lalita, you already know my feelings about this show-in particular this episode via commenst we exchanged elsewhere. The reason to come back to your blog and post again on this thread was this piece of news in the washington post yesterday.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/2chambers/post/bill-banning-sex-selective-abortions-fails-in-the-house/2012/05/31/gJQAgCYn4U_blog.html?hpid=z3&Post+generic=%3Ftid%3Dsm_twitter_washingtonpost

For those of you unable to access the link:

(US) Lawmakers voted 246 to 168 on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), which would punish doctors with up to five years in prison for performing abortions because the parents are seeking a child of the other sex. But the bill failed to pass as House Republicans brought it up under a suspension of normal rules that required it to earn a two-thirds majority vote. Twenty Democratic lawmakers voted for the bill; seven Republicans voted against it.

(In Contrast) several nations, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, ban sex-selective abortions. The United States has no such law, even though the State Department has published reports critical of other countries, including China, for widely accepting the procedure.

President Obama opposed the bill because it would intrude on a women’s abortion rights and would be hazardous for doctors who perform abortions.

So much for a developed nation.. They talk the talk but can't walk the walk. Worry about misinterpretation/misuse of the law (not completely unfounded) prevents a potentially good bill from being passed :(
