Currently, madly addicted to Bade Acche Lagte Hain. Reading too many stories about how a separation is imminent to revive the lagging TRPs of the shos to enable Ekta to garner some extra income from advertisements. Don't undesrtand the logic, is she so badly in need of the money that she can allow a premier classy show to fall in the routine traps of saas-bahu paths, inspite of holding onto the script for a few years, waiting to sign up the lead pair?
Anyways, in pure frustration, penned down on how a separation track might work out in the show; thus satisfying both the TRP meter as well as the die hard fan clubs of the show.
So, here goes !
But how?
Ram had utilized the day in conversing with his step mom and sister. Though he had not gained any additional information, the belief that they did not actually care for him and wanted his marriage to break, was reinforced many times over. He was sure of that. Now he needed further information on what was happening in his office where so many powers were delegated to these family members. And more importantly, he needed to know who had made that phone call to him and who had struck the blow.
Somehow he believed that the call had been from a genuine well wisher. The voice had been too courteous and gentle. And had even warned him against his step family. He had asked his assistant to get him a new phone the next morning with all his contacts and important information updated. The previous one could not be found after the attack on him. But he didn’t think it was related to the incident. It was an expensive phone and would have been picked up by any passerby. He needed one more night .. with an intoxicated Mamaji and Sid to collect as much information as he could before he winded up this drama.
I really must have done something bad in my previous life, he thought wryly. My own mother deserted me and then my step family whom I loved so much also hoodwinked me for so many years. He remained pensive and silent for some time.
He wanted to respond to the email … but anyways Priya would access it the next day only. Was there any way he could pull off something in front of Niharikaji and manage to have Priya in his arms for a brief moment? Mamaji was also on his way up … what could he do?
He knew Niharika and Shiney totally believed in his partial amnesia act. Was there any incident during his marriage, which had taken place supposedly just a week back, and which he could utilize to his own advantage now?
He thought for some time. And yes. He had an idea. A bumper idea. Somehow just the thought of Priya in his arms seemed to instigate his thinking buds. He was sure he had never behaved like this before Priya came into his life.
He opened his laptop. Niharika was busy watching the fashion show. He took a piece of paper from the side table and placed it on the keyboard and started writing on it, under the cover of the laptop screen.
My love,
I will respond to your email later. And explain many things over and over practically so that you never have have to say “I don’t know why” ever again.
Now, ask Neha to give a call on your phone … and disconnect. You hand over the phone to me and say that a lady wants to speak to me.
And don’t forget to shred this paper.
Ram didn’t dare to add anything more. Mamaji would come up soon and he was sharper than his sister.
Priya was stealing glances at him from over the top of her notebook. He indicated the piece of paper and then hid it in his pocket and went to the washroom.
One of Priya’s nightgowns was hanging behind the door. He slipped the piece of paper in a pocket of the nightgown and came out and sat down to do some work again.
After five long minutes, Priya got up and went to the washroom too. She found the note almost immediately. She read it over and over again but could not shred it. “My love” these words in Ram’s writing were so precious. This was her husband’s first letter to her. She read it once more and came out of the washroom. She opened Ram’s wardrobe and hid the piece of paper in Ram’s chocolate box. Now this chocolate box was special for her too.
Ram prayed that Mamaji would not enter before Priya had managed to do what he’d asked. He started discussing the fashion show with his mom. From the corner of his eyes, he saw Priya come out and settle herself on the couch again and pick up her pen. Then she put down her pen, took up her cell and typed a message.
Within a few minutes, there was a call on her phone.
Priya : Hello
……
Priya : Haan ji, this is Mr. Priya Kapoor. May I know who’s speaking?
….
Priya : Yes, Mr. Kapoor’s phone is not working now. Yes, of course you can speak to him.
Niharika and Ram were both looking at Priya. Niharika put the television on mute. Priya got up from the couch and walked to the bed handing out the phone to Ram.
Priya : Mr. Kapoor, koi Ms. Malhotra ka phone hai. She’s been trying to contact you par aapka number nahin lag raha hai.
Ram took the phone and swiftly switched it off. He could not afford to have the phone suddenly ring whilst he was on his pretend call.
Ram : Hello ! Yes?
……
Ram : What? How did you get this number?
……
Ram : Australia?
Ram paced the room angrily and then walked out of the room, still talking.
Priya gave a shrug and walked back to the couch. Niharika switched off the TV and stood up, tensed.
Mamaji also came into the room. He looked around for Ram and was surprised to see Niharika standing by the door looking worried.
After a few minutes Ram came back to the room. He was totally disturbed, sweating profusely. And in a very foul mood.
Ram : Ma …. then he looked towards Priya and stopped.
Ram : Priya, if you don’t mind, I need to speak to Ma and Mamaji for some time, alone.
Priya got up from the couch : Yes of course Mr. Kapoor. I’ll go down to Daadi and when …..
Ram, interrupted : No, I think, you stay here. Ma, Mamaji please come with me.
He looked back towards Priya : Priya, there’s a red office file there. Can you please take that out?
There was just a slight emphasis on the word “red”.
He didn’t wait for an answer nor did he look back. He walked down the stairs to the bar with Niharika and Shiney following him. He was so angry that his hands were shaking whilst he tried to pour out a drink.
Mamaji took the bottle from him and filled three glasses.
Niharika : Kya ho gaya Ram? Whose call was that? Why are you so worried?
Shiney : Oye kya hua Ram puttar? Bata toh sahii? Kya hua? Kis ka phone ayaa tha?
Ram, almost screamed : That was Apeksha. I don’t know how the hell she got Priya’s number. Mamaji, you said you would take care of her. On the mehendi night, she managed to enter my room in office and now she’s calling up Priya. What is happening? And she kept on referring to Australia …. that what she didn’t manage to do there, she would complete now. She said she’s coming here tomorrow and will enter Kapoor Mansion at any cost. What is happening? Is she is Australia? And what did she try to do there?
Niharika picked up her glass and downed its contents in a gulp. She did not know what exactly transpired between Ram and Priya on the day she had arranged for the divorce papers … but she felt somehow that
Ram would not have disclosed the truth to Priya. At that time, Ram was not in love with Priya and would have laid greater emphasis on his mother’s words that revealing of this terrible secret would make Priya leave him. He would definitely not have shared Apeksha and Krishnaji’s secret with Priya.
But now things were different. In case Apeksha managed to meet Priya and talk to her at length, and then
Ram recovered his memory and Priya shared the discussion with him, that would mean the end of her stay in Kapoor Mansion.
She forgot what had happened the last few days. She was desperate now. She tried to pull her brother with her out of the room. Shiney, the ever practical man, disengaged his hands from his sister’s clasp, refilled the two glasses and then followed his sister.
Shiney : Ram puttar, you stay here.I’ll just settle this issue. Agar woh kal aa rahi hai, toh hume abhi usse rokna hoga. We’ll just join you in 10 minutes.
Ram waited till his step mother and step uncle left the room. He walked slowly to the bottom of the flight of stairs leading to his room. He looked around quicky to see if anyone was watching and then ran up the stairs, taking two steps at a time. This was actually the first time he had run in his life … for as long as he could remember.
He entered his room and locked the door. But where was Priya ?
He made his way to the changing room. And then he caught a glimpse of red. Priya was standing hidden behind the open door of the wardrobe. He walked to the wardrobe and closed the door. Priya, standing in the red nightgown, covered her face with her hands.
Slowly Ram removed her hands and forced her to look up to him. Priya raised her face but kept her eyes closed.
Ram : Mujhe dekhogi bhi nahin?
Priya shook her head.
Ram just held out his hands. Priya opened her eyes for a brief moment and and buried herself in his chest.
They had hugged a few times earlier. All their hugs had been spontaneous with no one to stop them. But this was special since this time they had to wait for this. Control their emotions and wait even to embrace the other. Priya could hear Ram’s heart beating wildly against her, his arms so fiercely enclosing her that she felt her bones would break. Ram could smell her sweet fragrance, could feel her heart pulsating with desire.
He slowly disengaged himself and kissed her, on her forehead, on her eyes. Then he stopped. Priya had her face upturned towards him, waiting for the feel of him on her lips. She waited for some time and opened her eyes, wondering.
Ram : Will you ever tease me with the bindi like you did this morning?
Priya blushed.
Ram : No, you have to reply. Will you ever do that again?
Priya shook her head and tried to move closer to him.
Ram smiled at her and brought his lips down to meet hers. Was love really so special, so beautiful ?
After some time, they moved back.
Ram : Mujhe jaana hoga. They must be waiting or me to return. And I have a lot to discuss with them today.
Priya nodded.
Ram : Tum aaj bhi Daadi ke paas chale jao. Just for tonight.
Priya nodded again.
Ram left the room. Just before leaving, he turned back once more : And don’t forget to change your clothes before you go.
Priya smiled. At peace after the turmoil of the last few days.
Anyways, in pure frustration, penned down on how a separation track might work out in the show; thus satisfying both the TRP meter as well as the die hard fan clubs of the show.
So, here goes !
Ram returned home from office. He was super excited thinking of the company he had purchased for Priya and anticipated the look in her eyes when he would show her the actual papers. He was about to mount the stairs, when his mother called him.
Niharika : Ram, how was your day?
Ram, surprised : Good, normal, like every other day.
Shiney : Sweetu, only Ram’s attire has changed. Why should the day be any different?
He turns to Ram : Isn’t that so?
Ram, still puzzled : Yes, but I don’t understand..do you want to say something?
Niharika : I was just wondering Ram …. If you want to wear casual clothes, I can pick them up for you. But maybe you should ask Priya not to visit downmarket places to try and pick up cheap clothes for you.
Ram : I don’t understand. Priya buying clothes? From where?
Niharika : Ram, come on, she must have told you that she was going to Penkerfaut Road! I know Ram, that Priya is a mature woman, and dislikes taking any advice from me or discussing anything with me, but I feel she should have taken a car from the house. Its not correct going to such places in an auto. It is only for her personal safety and security, After all, we are responsible for her safety now. But Ram, don’t repeat all this in front of Daadi. She’ll be hurt that the eldest bahu of this house is deliberately trying to malign your image by travelling in an auto, being seen in seedy places, even if it is for a good cause. There is a certain image you need to maintain in front of the media, in front of society and …..
Ram did not want to hear any more. He nodded briefly and went up to his room. He had no idea why Priya would have gone to such a notorious locality on her own but was sure that it would have been for a valid reason. He just felt exasperated that she did not use any of the family cars and unnecessarily exposed herself to criticism from his mother. He decided to discuss the issue with her once she came home and to tell her to strictly stop using auto and other pblic means of transportation.
Priya entered a few minutes later. She had been sitting with Daadi since the time she had returned and had not even had time to come up to to their room. At the sight of her, Ram’s worry and tension evaporated. There was something magical in her smile, he thought again, as he tried to pull her towards him. But she was smarter and rushed off to the changing room. He heard the sound of water running and wondered how he could torment her and tease her, in return.
After a brief while, Priya opened the bathroom door slightly.
Priya : Mr.Kapoor
Ram : Haan?
Priya : Can you please go outside for some time?
Ram : Why?
Priya : I’ve forgotten to bring my clothes. Please go.
Ram had got the opportunity he was looking for.
Ram : No, I will not go.
Priya : Why are you behaving like a child?
Ram : I’m not.Oh, by the way, how was your day today?
Priya : Good, normal day. I had some extra classes also today and hence got delayed a bit. But we can discuss all that later. Now can you kindly leave the room?
Ram : No. I’ll give you something to wear. Wait. But I’m not going anywhere.
Priya : Ok
Ram started looking for something in her cupboard.
Priya, after some time : Can you please hurry up?
Ram : Yes, I’ve got it. Take it.
Priya extended her hand and Ram handed over something. Priya closed the door with a bang before Ram could do anything further.
Ram stood outside and waited, smiling.
Priya : What have you given? Where did you get this?
It was the famous red nightie .. the one Priya had been forced to wear in Australia for the 1st night.
Though they had shared so many intimate moments together, Priya was still embarrassed to wear it and come out to the room.
Ram continued to wait when suddenly his conversation with his mother came back to his mind. But Priya just said that she had been at her classes all day ! Why did his mother say that Priya had visited an unsavoury locality all alone?
Ram : Priya, did you go anywhere today? I mean, apart from your classes?
Priya hoped Rishabh had not spilled the beans to Ram and answered bravely : No.
Ram was puzzled. But he shrugged it off, sure that his mother would have been mistaken. If Priya had categorically confirmed that she had not gone anywhere, there was no chance that she was telling an untruth. He would discuss it with Niharika the next day.
Finally the washroom door opened and Priya came out. This time she didn’t have any dupatta covering her and she stood shyly by the door, suddenly coy in full light.
Ram looked at her and wondered for the hundredth time how lucky he was.
Just then, his phone rang.
Ram : Hello ..
“Hello, is that Mr.Ram Kapoor”
Ram : Yes, who is this?
“Mr.Kapoor, I am a well wisher of your family. Your late father was a good friend of mine. I just wanted to inform you that a lot of wrong things are carried on in Kapoor Industries now, things which you or your father would never have allowed. If you do not trust me, please reach your office and wait in the alley, a liitle way from Gate Number 3. You will understand what I am talking about. But do not, I repeat, do not alert any of your family members or you will not get the proof you require”
With this the caller hung up. Ram stood still for a moment, wondering what to do. The voice on the other side had seemed very eduated and courteous. Was it a crank call or was it really a well wisher, someone who knew that invoking the memory of Ram’s late father would immediately convey the seriousness of the issue? Ram missed the presence of Vikram in his professional life.
Priya was still standing by the door. By now, she was also serious, her eyes seeking reassurance from him that all was well. He wanted to tell her, share with her … but for one, there was no time, and also he did not want her to worry.
Ram : Priya, I need to go. It seems urgent. Please..?
Priya nodded : Yes, of course. Is everything fine?
Ram : I hope so ……….. Main jaake aata hoon…………
With a brief hug to Priya, he was gone. As he was leaving the house, Niharika and Shiney watched him go.
Within half an hour, Ram had reached the alley near Gate number 3. It was totally dark by this time and there was no one around. He parked his car and switched off the headlight. What should he do now?
Suddenly he saw a few men in the distance carrying out something from the gate. It seemed to be office files from the distance. Who were they? And where was the guard, dammit?
Ram got down from the car and started to walk towards the office. He didn’t even hear the footsteps of the people who silently came up from behind him. It was just an instinct which made him turn back .. to see one of the men raise a club high in the air and bring it down on his head.
Ram fell down on the ground and lost consciousness.
It was Rishabh who informed Priya that Ram had an accident and they were rushing to the hospital. Priya took just 2 minutes to change out of the red nightgown and join Rishabh in the car. Even in the state of utter shock, she remembered to call up Vikram as she wanted Vikram & Neha by her side for support.
Apart from her and Daadi, they were the people who loved Ram the most.
When she entered the hospital, a lot of people had already gathered. The media was also present in full force as the news of the assault on Ram had spread like fire. All senior doctors in the hospital were attending him and it was difficult for even family members to go near him. Niharika and Shiney were addressing the media and thanking them for their support. A few media people turned to Priya with questions but she was too dazed to respond. Neha led her away from there and made her sit in a quiet area. Ayesha and Natasha also joined them, all of them trying to comfort Priya
Vikram joined them some time later. The examination and immediate treatment was over and they would be allowed to meet him only after the effect of heavy sedation had worn off.
The next two hours were the longest hours of Priya’s life. She had always been religious and a strong believer in the Almighty but she prayed in those hours as she had never prayed before. In the meanwhile, Vikram went to try and find out what exactly had happened. The entire Kapoor and Sharma family paced the floors in worry. Daadi too had refused to return home and sat in a corner, tears falling down her cheeks.
Vikram and Rishabh came back with some information. Apparently, occupants of a passing car had noticed Ram lying unconscious on the road. On getting down from the road, one of them had recognized Ram and realized that Kapoor Industries was just in front of them. They had alerted the guards who had then contacted the personnel department. Ram had lost a bit of blood but as of now, it seemed that no major surgery would be required. The people who had saved Ram had not noticed anyone else around and had left their contact details with the guard.
Priya took Vikram aside and informed him that Ram had received a phone call which had seemed to disturb him a bit and he had left right after the call. He had not shared any details with Priya but she was sure from his conversation that he did not think he would be held up for a very long time. Maybe the last received number would help identify and trace the caller? Vikram shook his head. Ram’s wallet stuffed with a lot of money as usual was intact. It was only his phone which was missing. However, he quickly called up a few people and asked them to go back to that area and check once again. Maybe it was still inside the car.
The first signs of dawn were breaking when the doctor came out and informed Niharika that a few close family members could meet Ram now but he also cautioned them not to excite Ram or allow him to speak too much. Niharika led the way with Shiney, Priya, Vikram and Daadi following her.
It took Priya quite an effort to stop the cry that came up her throat. Ram looked so helpless lying down the bed with bandages covering his head. But his trademark smile was present when he turned his head with slight difficulty and looked at Daadi.
Daadi : Golu yeh tujhe kya ho gaya? Kisne tere saath yeh kiya .. why would anyone want to hurt my cute inncocent Golu, who has never hurt anyone in his life and who has never wished ill for anyone in his life?
Niharika : Maaji, the doctors have told us not to worry Ram now. Aap please shaant ho jayiye.
Ram : Daadi, mujhe sahii mein nahin pata ki kya hua nahi mujhe kuch yaad hai but I’m fine now. Please don’t worry. Aapka Golu bahut jald thik ho jayega aur aapse 10 alu ke parathe maangega. Aap ready rehna.
Vikram : See Daadi, your Golu is asking you for alu parathas. Now do you believe that he’s fine?
Daadi smiled finally : Haan puttar, par ab Golu alu ke parathe kab khata hai? Now he only has healthy sandwiches and fruits.
Ram : What ! Daadi, aap kya keh rehe hai? I thought someone banged me on the head and here you are talking like this ! Main paratha nahin khaata? Aur who bhi alu ke ?
Daadi : Golu, tu chup kar. I know eating parathas is not healthy for you and doctors have said no to parathas. Tu wahi kha jo Priya deti hain and I’ll be happy. But come home fast.
Ram turns to Vikram : Vikram, what is Daadi saying? Ram Kapoor having healthy food? Daadi thik toh hain na?
Vikram : Haan Ram, now its been six-seven months of your marriage and its been only one or two months that you’ve started listening to Priya and eating healthy food. Ab tu phir se parathe khana shuru karega kya?
Ram, interrupted : Six seven months? Vikram, what is wrong with you? I just got married a few days back ! Then I went to the US and just returned today !
Vikram, Niharika and everyone around were stunned. Priya could believe what she just heard. What was he saying? Why was he not looking at her? It was just 7-8 hours back that he had teased her and given her the red nightgown and stood waiting outside the washroom door. Why did he not look at her and hold her hands and reassure her that everything was fine? And what was the meaning of what he was saying?
Niharika and Daadi were puzzled. It was only Vikram and Shiney who were still somewhat close to understanding an inkling of the terrible truth.
It was finally Shiney who spke out : Ram sab kuch bhool toh nahin gaya hai?
Priya could not stand any more. Her legs gave way and she collapsed on the nearest chair. Vikram rushed to call the doctor and they all stood back whilst he examined Ram again and spoke to him. After some time he called in another doctor and requested everyone else to step out of the room.
Again there was another grueling wait of almost an hour. Senior doctors who had been there with Ram till midnight were called back again. Priya’s mind was blank. She was incapable of any thought and clung to Neha and Daadi for support.
Finally the main doctor came back and called them into his consultation room. He waited till as many family members as possible could fit into his room and then he spoke softly : Yes, it seemed Mr. Ram Kapoor had suffered a short term memory loss. He remembered everything till his return from the US right after his marriage. He remembered that he had gone directly to his office from the airport. And that was the last memory he had.
Priya ran out of the room.
Could God really punish her in this way? After so many years of solitude and lonelinessness, she and Ram had just found bliss together. Realised that they were indeed soul mates, waiting to meet all these years. And today Ram had forgotten everything? After just a few days together? How could she survive now?
Daadi and Vikram came to Priya, trying to console her. Niharika, Shiney and Sid had a quick conference just outside the doctor’s chamber. It seemed as if their prayers had been answered at last. Last time, Niharika had been complacent, had not seriously considered the possibility that Ram could really fall in love with his middle class wife. But now, with Ram having forgotten everything, everything was in her control now. This time she would play her cards from day 1.
All three of them came out to where Priya and the others were standing.
Niharika : Priya, don’t worry. Everything will be fine. The doctor said that they’re hopeful that it shouldn’t take too much time for Ram’s memory to come back. But till then he suggested that all circumstances stay the way they were seven months back. So maybe, for Ram’s benefit, Priya should stay with her parents till he recovered fully.
But Niharika had reckoned without Daadi.
Daadi : Vikram puttar, mujhe zara woh doctor ke paas le chal, mujhe unse milna hai.
Niharika : Maaji, don’t worry, we will all try that Ram gets well soon. But we shouldn’t pressurize the doctor to listen to our emotional demands.
Daadi : Oye Chutki, Priya ghar chod kar kahin nahin jayegi. Ram ko apna shaadi toh yaad hai na, toh Priya sath mein rahegi, ussmein kya problem hai?
The doctor had joined them by then. He had overheard the conversation and on being requested by Vikram, gave his opinion.
He turned to Priya and told him : Mrs. Kapoor, first let me assure you that Mr.Kapoor is perfectly all right physically. I am surprised with this short term memory loss and the panel of doctors treating him shall meet again in a few hours to finalise on the best possible treatment. Since he remembers his wedding, I see no reason for you to remain separate, however I would just request you to make the situation as near to what it would have been at the time to which he last remembers. That is all.
Niharika was very angry but could not do anything about it. But she would not accept this so easily. She started to make plans and decided, if realized, she would shift to Ram’s room too, to pretend to take care of him. Without telling anyone, she hurried home from the hospital, determined to immediately alter the renovation of Ram’s room and bring it back to its original color and furnishings before Daadi could interrupt.
Vikram remained behind at the hospital and persuaded Priya to return home with Neha , freshen up and rest for a while before returning to the hospital. He promised Priya that he would not leave Ram’s side till she returned. Meanwhile, Shiney and Sid also remained back, trying to gather as much information they could, about Ram’s memory loss. What a day! They would hit the bar in the morning itself today for a gala celebration.
Natasha offered to go home with Priya. But Priya was not even in a postion to respond. She held on to Neha, totally shocked. Neha reassured the entire Sharma family and drove Priya home. At the door, Priya requested Neha to go home. She wanted to go up to her room and spend some time alone. However Neha was not ready to leave her alone in this stage and it took Priya quite a while to reassure her that she would be all right, alone.
Finally Neha left and Priya walked up the stairs to her room. At the top of the stairs, she got a shock.
There were 2 people carrying out the 2 large photo frames. The purple furnishings were being brought back to the room. There were at least six to seven people inside the room destrying all the work she had done so lovingly in the last week. As she stood there, Niharika personally carried out the small frame from the bedside table, with both their snaps, giving a smirk as she walked past Priya.
Priya went to the washroom and closed the door. She could not take it any more. She sat down on the floor and leaned against the wall. Was this a dream? A terrible dream which would break when she woke up? Or was this reality? Physical destruction of the renovation seemed to be the last straw. If there was any chance of Ram recovering his memory when he entered his room, that was all gone now. Would their entire life in the last 7-8 months remain a dream? Their gradual shift from tolerating each other to some precious moments in Australia, their becoming friends, declaration of their love for each other and their finally becoming one, in the true sense of the word? Had Ram forgotten all that? Had he really forgotten how he had made her feel on top of the world by fulfilling so many of her crazy wishes? It was true … the Ram Kapoor of last night had not been the Ram Kapoor she had married. He had changed so much in the past few months. Had he now reverted back to that original businessman after this incident?
That would mean that Ram would not also remember that he had finally shared his deepest secret of Krishuji and Apeksha with Priya. Would he again get back into his shell, not allowing Priya to come closer? And it was life back at the couch for her?
The red nightgown was still hanging by the basin, where she’d left it in a hurry whilst she got dressed on her way to the hospital. Had Ram forgotten all memories connected with that? Would the new Ram ever again tease her and …. Fresh tears continued to pour down her face. There was no sound; she was totally alone, silently miserable.
Her phone rang. It was Neha. Priya did not answer the call. Was it only that morning when Ram had held her hand under the table? Was it only that morning that she had adjusted his tie and wiped the sweat off his forehead? There were so many thoughts, so many questions. How would it be possible for deal with Ram now? Be in the same room and behave as if she had just moved into the room a few days back? For heaven’s sake, she had moved into his heart and his bed a few days back; was it all over?
She could hear people talking outside. She slowly opened the door and went out.
Niharika had brought a huge bag of medicines for Ram. She had contacted the doctor and arranged for the list of medicines which he used to take. She stood by the bed and ordered Bansi Kaka to place the medicines where they used to be earlier.
Niharika : Priya, I’m sorry we had to do all this. But I’m sure you realize that it is for Ram’s own good. If Ram sees the changes that happened, he would not be able to identify them and understand them and that would automatically put a pressure on his brain and delay the natural process of recovery. I hope you understand.
Priya nodded. There was nothing she could say and further, she was still not in a position to speak.
Niharika continued : I have just spoken to the doctors. Ram will probably be discharged in the next 2-3 days and will be advised to take full rest for the first few days and then gradually resume work. I have appointed a full time nurse for the first one week or so. I have instructed Bansi to arrange the couch just outside the room for the nurse. Please leave the door open at night so that the nurse can take care whenever required. And Ishika is also willing to help. She is very worried for her Bhai; so in case you want, you can shift to Daadi’s room and Ishika can shift in here. I’m sure you’ll be more comfortable there.
Priya : No, I would prefer to remain here, please.
Niharika raised her eyesbrows : As you wish.
She left the room after instructing the workers to complete their work by the next day positively.
Priya stood silently for some time, wondering what to do. There was too much dust and dirt in the room and there was no place even to sit. She did not want to talk to Daadi also and decided to go to the hospital.
She was just getting into an auto outside the gate when Neha reached in her car. Neha had been worried since Priya had not picked up her call and she had come to check on her. She had just spoken to Vikram.
Ram seemed normal, apart from the memory loss and Vikram, Shiney and Sid were all with him. Priya asked Neha to drop her at the hospital. She refused to stop for breakfast on the way and Neha did not insist.
Priya ran up to the room. Ram was resting, surrounded by Shiney and Sid. Vikram was dozing off in a chair slightly away from the others. It was so difficult to contain herself; she felt like running to Ram and hugging him and hiding herself in his broad chest. Suddenly she felt that if she could do that once, all her worries would vanish. Mamaji and Sid were looking at her intently. Slowly she turned and went to sit beside Vikram.
Vikram woke up and started talking to Priya in a low tone so as not to disturb Ram. He had no clue as of now and was totally baffled as to what had actually happened. Ram was still under the dosage of strong medicines and he woke up late in the afternoon when the nurse came with some food. He got up and smiled at everyone. Priya went forward hesitating. Vikram tried his best to take Mamaji and Sid out of the room on some pretext or the other.
Ram : Tumhe aadat ho gaya hoga abhi mujhe hospital mein dekhne ka. Kuch din pehle, mehendi wale din bhi yehi hua and aaj phir. Priya, don’t worry about about me. You go home and rest. Yeh log sab hai na.
Sid : Haan Bhabhi, aap ghar jayiye. Hum log hain na, we will keep you updated on any progress. And then if required, you can always reach here in less than an hour.
Priya looked towards Ram : No, if you don’t mind, I would like to stay here….?
Ram : No, why should I mind? Thanks. But please be comfortable. Vikram, thoda comfortable chairs ke bandobast kar de…?
Vikram : Haan Ram, don’t worry, I’ll arrange everything.
Priya continued to sit there in one corner, observing Ram intently. So many people came to meet him but no one was allowed to stay for more than a few minutes, on doctors orders. She had so much time to think and analyse the events for the last one or two weeks. So many thoughts played around in her mind; but she needed to remain silent and resilient now. Ram spoke to her once in a while, like a polite stranger … like they had been in the initial stages of their married life. It hurt her so much .. but she bore it with a smile, craving for one minute alone with him.
Around 9 pm finally, Ram forced Vikram to take her home. Vikram assured her that she would return back to the hospital and finally she agreed to go.
In the car, Priya hesitated to ask a question which had been preying in her mind since morning. She knew Ram loved Vikram like a brother but she still hesitated … maybe tomorrow, she would ask him.
The next day the same routine continued. Priya reached the hospital early in the morning wanting to catch a few minutes alone with Ram. But she found Mamaji sleeping on the chair next to him. Any private conversation was impossible. Ram was also sleeping, with his hand covering his eyes.
Vikram entered in some time. He had also slept at the hospital and had gone home at dawn to freshen up.
He needed to go to office for a very important presentation but Neha would be with Priya shortly.
Priya dragged her chair close to Ram and sat still, looking at him intently, as if willing him to wake up before Mamaji. At this moment she was desperate even for a stolen look… one moment when she and Ram could look at each other. She wanted to look deep into his eyes .. and Ram to look deeply at her too … how could Ram not remember anything?
The nurse finally came and woke up Ram when it was time for his breakfast and medicine. Shiney also woke up at the disturbance and smiled when he saw Priya.
Priya : Mamaji, aap fresh hoke aa jayiye .. main hoon na.
Shiney : Nahin, itna jaldi kya hai. Main aaram se jayunga. Don’t worry.
The day continued in the same manner. At any point of time, Niharika or Shiney were always in the room.
By evening, Priya realized that this was not a coincidence. She was deliberately not being allowed to spend time with Ram. And it could not be attributed to Ram’s no recollection of the last 7 months because Vikram was subjected to the same treatment. Even Vikram did not get a single moment alone with Ram. Priya wondered whether to share her suspicion with Vikram on the way back home that evening. She knew very well who had given her the intoxicated drink on the day of Holi and there were a lot more incidents she could link up. But again, she hesitated.
Ram was discharged the next evening, on his insistence that he was perfectly all right. On entering home, he was slowly helped up the stairs to his room. Priya was waiting very anxiously for the moment when Ram would enter his room. Would he remember that his room had been a different color when he had last left , a couple of days back?
Ram, on entering the room : Thank God, I’m back home. I missed this room very much. Its nice to be back in familiar surroundings.
Niharika gave a smirk. It was time to party. But first she needed to remind the nurse once again not to leave Ram alone with Priya for a single moment. The amount of money she had promised to give the nurse would almost enable her to buy a house in the suburbs. And if she failed, then she would have to face the consequences. God had given her a second chance and this time, she could not afford to make any mistake. The old Ram Kapoor would not disobey any single instruction given by Niharika and she reteirated once more before leaving the room.
Niharka : Ram, the nurse will give you all your medicines on time. During the day, she’ll be on this chair and at night she’ll be on the couch outside. Don’t close the door so that she can come and check on you at all times. And I may also come up a couple of times.
Ram : Ma, please don’t worry. And you don’t need to come up at all. I’ll be perfectly fine and I’ll definitely keep the door wide open.
Rishabh, Daadi, Vikram and Neha came up to meet him. Priya noticed that as soon as Vikram & Neha came in, Niharika enetered within a few minutes. She continued to sit beside Ram fussing over him the entire time and left only after Vikram and Neha had left.
As Niharika was about to leave, she noticed the nurse dozing off on the couch outside. It took her 2 seconds to decide that she could not rely solely on this nurse. Daadi and Rishabh were still sitting and she went down quickly and came back accompanied with Ishika.
Niharika : Ram, Ishika wants to spend the night with you today. I’ve tried explaining to her that you’re perfectly fine and need rest but she says that though she always loved you, seeing you in that stage in the hospital helped her to realize how much you mean to her. And she wants to stay here at night with you for the next few days. She can sleep on that couch.
Ram : Thik hai, that’s an honour. Ishika, I’ll be most happy if my sister takes so much care of me.
He turned towards priya : Priya, tum Daadi ke saath so jaoge? If you don’t mind?
Priya, totally depressed and dejected now : No, Mr. Kapoor, I have no problem.
She got up and started to pick up a few things. Daadi and Rishabh also got up to allow Ram to rest and started to move out of the room.
Niharika nudged Ishika to make her say something emotional to Ram.
Ishika : Bhai, aapko aise dekh kar meri toh jaan hi nikal gayee thi. Aapko kuch ho jaata toh…
Ram : Nahin Ishika. Nothing will happen to me. There are so many people working here in Kapoor Industries and all of you at home. How can anything happen to me when I know so many people depend on me for their livelihood, for their life. They have so many wishes in their lives which they depend on me to fulfil. How can I die without fulfilling all their wishes?
At this, Priya slowed down, on her way out.
Ram, continued : Aakhir sabke wishes bina poora kiye, mujhe kuch ho thodi sakta hai? Sabke zindagi ke sawaal hai, kisiko zindagi jeene ki sawaal hai, kisiko zindagi dene ki sawaal hai.
Priya stopped. She did not turn back to look at Ram but in that moment she felt as if she was flying in the sky. In the deep blue sky. Amongst puffs of white clouds, like a beautiful fairy ! Ram remembered, he remembered everything. He was playing a game, a deep and dangerous game and she could well understand what it was. These few days of separation did not matter. She did not even dare to smile as Niharika was watching her intently. She maintained a wooden, expressionless face as she walked out. Ram and she were on the same track. And they were one.
Ram knew too that she had understood. When she halted in her track for that brief moment, he knew that she had got his message. It had pained him tremendously to have played the game in the last few days.
But he could not forget the telephone conversation nor what he had seen. And Niharika and Shiney’s behaviour at the hospital had further strengthened his theories. He had done a lot of soul searching the last 2 days. And entering the room and seeing it renovated back to its initial décor had convinced him that his step mother did not want him to get close to his wife.
He missed Priya, missed her desperately. He wanted her in his arms, in the red nightgown. Cuddled against him and sleeping peacefully. But she would wait. He knew. Their love was too strong to be withered away by a few days or few weeks of forced separation.
He turned towards Ishika and forced himself to smile and talk.
Priya left the room.
Priya slept peacefully that night, finally. It was Daadi who woke her up at 7.30. She looked at the clock and was amazed that she’d slept for so long. The tension of the last few days had taken a toll on her.
Daadi was also surprised to see Priya sleeping so peacefully. Though she loved the old lady very much, Priya could not risk sharing the truth with her now. Daadi would never be able to keep it to herself.
Priya walked upto the foot of the staircase leading up to her room. She had climbed up this flight of stairs so many times in the last 6-7 months but suddenly it seemed such an arduous task. Going up to her room with Ram in the room but both of them unable to talk to each other. It was true, she thought wryly … the more a person got, the more he or she wanted. Till yesterday, she would have been perfectly happy, in the seventh heaven, just to know that Ram was well and remembered everything. And now?
Now she wanted to sit close to him … be in his arms, engulfed in a bear hug. Put her head on his broad chest and relax. Somehow that gave her as much peace and tranquility nowadays as her meditation and yoga sessions. There was something so big, so magnanimous in this man.
She shook her head, exasperated and amused with herself for her thoughts. She looked around once to see if Niharika was still around but she was nowhere to be soon. Slowly she climbed up the stairs and entered their room. The door was open. Both Ram and Ishika were sleeping. She did not even dare to stand close to the bed, in case Ram woke up and did something inconsistent with his memory loss ! She selected her attire for the day and went into the washroom. By the time she came out dressed, Ram was awake, Ishika was still sleeping and Niharika was sitting on the armchair.
This did not bother Priya and in fact, brought a slight smile to her lips. How long did Niharikaji think she could keep them apart in this manner? She realized that Niharika was desperate now. She was paranoid and if necessary, she would continue this routine till the time she thought of a scheme to send Ram to the US for a long stay or Priya back to Sharma House.
Bansi Kaka brought in the tea. Ram wished Priya a good morning and Priya responded back, formally.
Niharika kept up a steady flow of formal talk for some time and then tried to wake up Ishika. She asked Ram to help her.
Ram : Ishika, uth jaa ab. Its almost 8.30.
Ishika : Bhai, I don’t have any work to do. Please let me sleep till 11 at least.
Ram : Not here. I’m going to start work from today. And when I’m working, I don’t anyone sleeping here.
Niharika : No no. Ishika will wake up just now. But Ram, you need to take rest for a few more days.
Ram : No Maa, this is enough. I cannot sit idle like this any more.
Niharika : Ram, ok, wait till evening today at least. Let 24 hours be over since your discharge from the hospital.
Ram : Ok, but only till evening today.
Niharika smiled, like a contended mother : That’s like my good boy. Priya, are you leaving?
Priya : Yes, I’ll have breakfast with Daadi downstairs and leave.
Ram : Priya, before I left for US, Vikram had made me promise to take you to their house for dinner, the very day I returned. Now last few days obviously we weren’t able to go, so in case you’re free today, can we go?
Priya was just starting to say yes when Niharika interrupted.
Niharika : Ram, the doctors have advised you not to go to office and here you’re talking about attending a party. That would be much more hectic.
Ram : Its not a party, Ma. It’ll just be a family dinner.
Niharika : Ram, Vikram & Neha are not running away anywhere … I’m sure Vikram will understand if you explain it to him.
Ram : Ok. Priya, do you have Neha’s number? Can you please call up Neha or Vikram and explain everything to them?
Ram hesitated a bit before using the word “everything” and put just a little bit more stress on the word.
Ram continued : After all, Vikram is like family to me. So I would want him to know about everything that is going on. Please extend my apologies and tell him that we’ll meet him a few days later.
Priya briefly nodded and walked to the dressing room to fix her bindi. Deliberately, she fixed it just a bit crooked and then wished goodbye to everyone and walked out. She knew Ram would be itching to fix the bindi and would feel helpless since he could not. It was fun to tease him like this. He would also understand that she had done this deliberately.
Like the previous night, she did not try and meet Ram’s eyes on her way out. She could not hide the love for Ram in her eyes and she knew that Niharika was too sharp.
Ram watched her leave with sadness. He too had to hide his emotions and he buried himself in the newspaper. It was difficult to restrain himself from hugging her. And she’d just behaved like a witch right now, teasing him with the bindi. Ok, he would take his revenge too.
Priya called up Neha as soon as she was free from her classes. It was no use rushing home as Niharika would definitely be keeping guard. Neha promised to meet her at a coffee shop and Priya made her way there.
Neha : Priya, why did you sound so serious? Is Ram all right? Vikram will also reach in a few minutes.
Priya : Haan Neha, problem toh hai par…
Vikram also reached. They sat down and ordered for a round of coffee.
There was a sparkle in Priya’s eyes. Both Vikram & Neha noticed it and were amazed.
Priya noticed their zapped expressions. She looked at Vikram and smiled again. It was then that Vikram realized what was going on. He had his suspicion earlier but had not shared with either Priya or Neha because he did not want them to get disappointed in case it was not true.
Neha had still not caught on. She noticed Priya’s smile replicated on Vikram’s face.
Priya : Neha, main kuch nahin bolungi. Tum socho. Aur sochke batao.
It was a full 5 minutes before Neha was grinning too. She finally said : I wish Fatty was here too, now.
All three of them instinctively raised their coffe mugs as a toast to their missing buddy.
Priya started to brief them about whatever had happened.
Vikram : Priya, this is a very dangerous game that Ram has started. At home, with your help, he’s managing. But how will he manage office? How is he going to convince Niharikaji that he knows what has happened at work for the last 7 months but he doesn’t remember what happened at home?
Priya : I also don’t understand. But Niharikaji’s chief concern right now seems to be to separate Mr. Kapoor and me. I don’t think she’s going to start to think about office too.
Vikram : No Priya, don’t underestimate her. Mamaji is there too.
Neha : Vikram, I don’t think Fatty will continue this for long. He’s probably testing the reactions of people.
I’m sure within a couple of days, as soon as he’s gathered whatever information he needs, he’ll revert to his old self.
Vikram : Yes, you may be right..but…
Neha : Waise priya, how are you managing? Ram ke baahon mein..
Priya interrupted : Neha, tum chup ho jaayo. She was getting embarrassed in front of Vikram.
Vikram explained to Priya about Sid’s background. About all the stories he had heard about Sid, the proofs of some which he had himself seen. The stories of what a playboy he was. How he’d apparently got all fake licenses for a new company and pocketed the funds. How he’d transferred huge quantum of funds to various personal sources. And they went through the necklace episode once again and discussed threadbare all the issues. All of them knew and felt and understood how hurt Ram would be when all this came to light. It would be very difficult for him to tolerate and accept this.
However, even in all this, Priya kept one secret with herself. She did not reveal any details of Apeksha and Krishuji. She needed to talk that over with her husband first.
But the discussion did not bear any fruit. All of them were slightly hysterical; Vikram & Neha on being deliriously happy that Ram was all right and Priya on getting the opportunity to talk about Mr. Kapoor to her heart’s content even if she could not speak to the man himself.
Neha : Will you again sleep with Daadi tonight?
Priya : I guess so. Ishika will be in the room.
Neha : Toh? Why should you leave your room?
Priya : So what should I do?
Neha : How should I know? If you want to stay close to your hubby, you have to think of a plan ! If anyone had tried to separate Vikram from me, I would have torn out her eyes !
Vikram and Priya started laughing. Priya nodded her head indicating that she would not give in so easily that day. The battle lines were drawn. It was time for war.
Vikram took out his laptop to complete some work. It was then that Priya got a brilliant idea. She asked for use of the laptop for some time and settled down in a corner of the café. Vikram & Neha ordered a second round of coffee wondering what Priya was upto. Neha suggested that maybe Priya was trying to read up information on amnesia to help Ram in his mission.
It was past 9 pm when Vikram & Neha dropped Priya home. As soon as Priya started climbing up the stairs, Niharika came out of her room. By the time Priya reached her room, she were close on her heels.
Ram was lying down and reading a book. Ishika was watching TV. Priya guessed that Ishika would not have spent so much time with her brother in all these years put together. Natasha was genuinely close to her brother and would not have minded. She would have lived in that room exactly in the way she wanted and would have made Ram listen to whatever she had in mind. But Ishika was different and was decidedly uncomfortable.
Ram : Good evening.
Priya : Good evening. How are you feeling now?
Ram : I’m fine; and the doctor has confirmed that I can resume work now, from home. I just spoke to him some time back.
Niharika : Ram, your health is much more important to us than your office. The doctors do not know how much you pressurize yourself when you’re working. So work but only from home for a week or so. Should I ask Bansi to set the study or the library for you?
Ram : No, let me see how and where I’m comfortable. I’ll tell Bansi Kaka if required.
Niharika : Ok. Priya, aap fresh ho jao. I’ll tell Bansi Kaka to send your dinner to Daadi’s room.
Priya : Actually, there’s an exam tomorrow for which I need to set questions. I have to work for at least 3-4 hours and Daadi would be disturbed by the light. All my books are here and I don’t know which other books I might need for reference. I’ll sit here and do my work. And after I finish, I’ll go down to Daadi’s room.
She turns to Ishika : Ishika, I hope tumhe koi problem nahin hoga?
Ishika was stunned. For one, she had to wake up so early that day and now she would not even be allowed to sleep till after midnight !! And that couch was so uncomfortable !
But she did not have the guts to refuse to stay in that room. She knew Niharika would cut off her monthly allowance immediately. She personally did not care if Ram and Priya got together. The only thing that interested her was money. And more money.
Priya changed her clothes and came out. Niharika and Ishika were sitting on the armchairs. Priya smiled and took out as many books as she could and settled herself on the couch with the books spread all around. Neha was right. Why should she run away? After all, Niharika knew that Priya loved Ram. And she hadn’t forgotten anything. She didn’t have amnesia. So why should she also have to behave as if she didn’t care, in front of Niharika ?
Priya started to work, making copious notes. Ram too asked Ishika to pass him his laptop. Ishika could not stand it any longer. Niharika understood that it would be difficult to make Ishika spend the night here unless she got a break now for a few hours. She asked Ishika to go down and send Mamaji upstairs. She explained to Ram that Mamaji had wanted to come up many times to meet Ram but she hadn’t allowed him to; as she didn’t want Ram to be disturbed whilst he was sleeping.
Ishika left the room. Niharika took Ram’s permission and switched on the TV to watch a fashion show, on silent mode. Ram opened his mailbox.
After an hour or so, when he’d finished replying to all his emails, he opened the junk folder too for a quick glance. All emails from unknown people automatically got delivered to junk. Inspite of so many spam filters and multi levels of secutirty, the emails from credit card companies and travel portals always got delivered ! He was just going to do a “delete all” when he saw an email from “Gudiya Kapoor” with the subject … “I don’t know why?”
He opened the email.
“Dear Mr. Kapoor,
I feel like wearing the red nightgown now …. I don’t know why?
Aapki,
Gudiya“
Ram shut the laptop. He did not reply to the email. He could not. The need to have Priya in his arms was so overwhelming that he just did not know what to do. He did not want to spend the night together; he could stay without that for a few days. What he needed just now was just a fierce and warm embrace. He wanted to kiss her; kiss her forehead and then her eyes and then .. her lips. He wanted to rest his face on her hair and smell her. He wanted her arms around him, holding him tightly.
