Wanted : A Political Party : whose ELECTION MANIFESTO includes responsibility for SECURITY OF INDIANS

I’ve   read   more   than   a   score of   stories   of   how   the   Mossad   operates.

For   those   who   may   not   be   aware,   Mossad   is   the   Intelligence   wing   of   Israel.   Included   amongst   their   primary   KRAs      of   intelligence   collection   and   counterterrorism   is   their   assumed   responsibility      to   bring   back   to   Israel,   from   across   the   word,   any   Jew   who   wants   to   come   and   is   unable   to.   And   to   ensure   protection   of   the   Jewish   community   anywhere   in   the   world.

That’s   a   faith   every   Jew   has   on   his   country’s   national   intelligence   agency.   And   that’s   the   fear   every   terrorist   who   kills   an   Israeli,   has.   That   the   Mossad   will   track   them   down,   one   day.      And   eliminate   them.

The   methodical   way   by   which   the   Black   September   organization   members   were   tracked   and   killed   can   get   anybody’s   adrenalin   pumping.      After   11   members   of   the   Israeli   Olympic   team   were   murdered   during   the   1972   Olympics   at   Munich,   Prime   Minister   Golda   Meir   ordered   Mossad   to   assassinate   all   those   who   had   been   involved   in   the   kidnapping   and   annihilation   of   the   Israeli   sportsmen.   This   was   like   a   return   of   the   Holocaust   days;   spilling   of   Jewish   blood   on   German   soil.

Mossad   systematically   tracked   down   the   Palestinians   involved   in   the   massacre.   And   finished   them.

It’s   just   a   few   weeks   more   to   our   Lok   Sabha   elections.   All   the   campaigns   and   jingles   by   our   parties   are   strikingly   (or   rather,   disgustingly)   similar;   across   the   span   of   the   country.   If   one   is   the   incumbent   in   a   particular   state,   the   statisticians   are   busy   putting   together   numbers   of   flyovers   sanctioned,   roads   built   and   poverty   schemes   launched.   If   one   is   not   the   incumbent,   then   the   gross   errors   made   and   increase   in   inflation   and   corruption   levels   during   the   previous   period   are   repeatedly   drilled   into   the   head   in   a   droning   voice.

Not   a   single   person   tells   me   that   they   will   make   India   safe   for   me.   That   they   will   ensure   that   no   terrorist   can   bomb   me   or   make   me   put   my   hands   up   against   the   wall   and   shoot   me   in   front   of   my   family,   in   my   own   country.   Leave   aside   for   the   time   being,   if   that   happens   in   an   international   destination.

Is   that   too   much   to   ask   for?

Like   a   small   child   taught   the   same   thing   over   and   over   again,   will   I   always   be   told   that   it   is   difficult   to   implement   this   in   India   as   against,   say,   Israel,   because   of   the   sheer   size   and   density   of   India’s   population?

But   why?

If   we   have   too   many   people   to   take   care   of;   why   does   the   equally   important   fact   not   register   that   we   have   so   many   more   people   to   recruit   from   and   incorporate   in   our   security   wings   to   take   care   of   the   security   of   our   billions?

Who   will   give   me   that   strength   to   say;   I   am   an   Indian   and   not   a   single   bloody   terrorist   can   dare   attack   me;   within   the   confines   of   my   geography,   to   start   with.

Is   any   Prime   Ministerial   candidate   (whether   appointed   by   a   party   or   self   elected)   willing   to   take   that   responsibility?

Tomay chara ghum ashe na Maa .. (I need you Mother to fall asleep......)

Tomay  chara  ghum  ashe  na  Maa  -  a  Bengali  serial  playing  since  the  beginning  of  this  century  (well,  almost).

I  had  seen  around  five-six  episodes  of  this,  whilst  changing  channels  around  1  to  2  years  back.  Nothing  to  get  hooked  onto.

Until  I  saw  an  episode  in  the  last  week  of  November.  A  lady  reminiscing  her  life  spent  with  her  daughter  who  had  just  got  married  and  left.  And  then  she  talks  about  going  away  as  her  work  was  all  over.  She  had  fulfilled  her  duty  by  bringing  a  daughter  to  her  father.

I  was  like.....what  does  this  mean??

"Mother  :  Ebaar  ami  chole  jaabo  (Now  I  will  leave).
Father  :  Na,  tumi  jaabe  na.  Jete  dile  to  jabe.  (No,  you  will  not  go.  You  cannot  if  I  dont  allow).
Mother:  Onnay  jed  koro  no.  (Don't  be  unreasonable)
Father  :  Your  daughter  needs  you.  And  so  do  I. After  a  certain  age, everyone  needs  someone special  by  their  side  to  even  want  to  continue  living.
Mother  :  Eta  shonao  paap.  (Its  wrong  even  to  hear  things  like  this.)
Father  :  Bhalobashai  kono  paap  punno  hoi  na.  (There's  no  right  or  wrong  in  love)."

The  mother  is  blind,  by  the  way.

I  don't  know  what  it  was  in  this  scene  that  had  me  hooked.  I  googled  for  online  episodes  and  drew  a  blank  on  youtube.  Dailymotion  had  random  episodes.  I  finally  found  all  episodes  embedded  in  the  Star  Jalsha  website.  I  was  awake  one  whole  night  watching  all  old  episodes,  fast  forwarding  (in  my  opinion)  unnecessary  scenes  (though  actually  they  constitute  the  main  storyline)  and  was  gifted  for  my  patience  in  being  able  to  watch  7-8  scenes  between  this  couple.

"A  touch  of  hands.Pulling  her  hand  away.  Trying  to  hold  her  by  the  shoulders.  Again  pulling  away.  And  the  hurt  in  his  eyes.  And  the  longing."

The  story  is  about  a  young  girl  who  was  separated  from  her  father  during  an  accident.  Her  mother  dies  in  that  accident.  The  father,  inspite  of  searching  for  his  daughter  over  many  years,  in  unable  to  locate  her.  He  marries  his  sister-in  law  in  deference  to  his  mother-in-law's  wishes  but  makes  sit  clear  to  his  new  wife  that  whilst  he  would  always  do  his  duties,  she  would  never  have  any  rights  as  a  "wife".

In  the  meanwhile,  this  unconscious  and  hurt  young  girl  lands  up  at  a  private  nursing  home,  owned  by  Protima  Roychowdhury.  She  has  recently  lost  her  own  daughter  and  decides  to  take  care  of  this  accident  victim  who  has  lost  her  memory.  She  raises  the  child  (Jhilik)  as  her  own  daughter.  Jhilik  goes  through  the trauma  of trying  to find  out  her  real  mother  and  after  many  years,  after  her  husband's  death,  Protima  finds  out  that  Jhilik  is  actually  the  daughter  of  Samaresh,  her  first  love  and  whom  she  had  been  unable  to  marry.

Samaresh's  sister  had  been  very  close  to  her  as  well  and  she  brings  Protima  and  Jhilik  into  the  house  even  when  Samaresh  screams  at  her  asking  her  to  leave,  when  he  first  sees  her.

The  initial  meetings  between  the  two  are  brilliant.  On  one  side,  his  anger  at  her  leaving  him  and  getting  married  to  a  wealthy  guy  and  on  the  other,  his  dormant  love  erupting  again  after  so  many  years,  both  fighting  for  supremacy.  His  words,  trying  to  deliberately  hurt  her,  that  she  destroyed  his  life,  betrayed  him....and  the  underlying  hope  that  this  would  spur  her  to  reveal  that  there  must  have  been  some  valid  reason.  And  her  refusal  to  give  in.  Of  maintaining  that  she  had  come  only  to  give  him  his  daughter.  Her  lack  of  visual  perception  not  allowing  her  not  only  to  see  him  but  also  to  see  how  his  eyes  lit  up  with  happiness  when  she  was  around.  And  her  constant  entreats  to  him  not  to  come  to  her  room.

The  main  story  actually  revolves  around  Jhilik  (the  daughter)  and  her  love  affair  with  Arunangshu  whilst  she  actually  gets  married  to  a  paralytic  guy,  Rajdeep,  in  deference  to  her  father's  wishes.  And  the  story  revolves  (in  deference  to  TRP  requirements)  about  the  evil  second  wife  and  his  evil  son  and  so  on  and  so  forth.

When  she  questions  him  for  scolding  her  when  she  forgets  her  medicines,  he  responds  "Samparka  thake  na.  Kintu  adhikaar  bodh  ta  roye  jaye.  (Relationships  don't  stay.  But  the  feeling  of  right  to  take  care,  right  to  scold..  these  don't  get  obliterated.)  "

And  when  his  evil  wife  orders  her,  a  blind  woman,  in  the  darkness  of  the  night,  to  leave  her  house  immediately,  and  insults  her  of  trying  to  entice  a  married  man,  Protima  obliges.  And  as  expected,  on  the  mountain  roads  of  Darjeeling,  it  is  Samaresh's  car  she  has  an  accident  with,  when  he  is  returning  home.  When  he  entwines  his  fingers  with  hers,  she  first  pushes  him  away  when  she  recognises  his  touch And  when  he  persists,  she  breaks  down  and  allows  him  to  lead  her  to  his  car.  And  then  he  takes  her  to  a  hotel  as  its  too  dark  to  drive  up  the  mountain  roads.

"Samaresh,  there  are  many  blind  people  walking  on  the  roads  who  have  no  one"
and  pat  comes  the  response,
"Kintu  tomar  to  ache.  (But  you  have  someone.  Why  do  you  persist  in  thinking  that  you  are  alone?  )"

She  refuses  to  share  with  him  what  provoked  her  to  leave  home.  But  he  guesses  anyway  and   when  he  takes  her  back  home,  he takes a minute to gather all his mental strength and then  holds  her  hand  and  leads  her  in.  In  front  of  everyone.  His  wife  and  her  son,  his  sister,  his  mother-in-law  and  so  many  more  pile  ons  present  in  the  house.

Ecstasy.  Amazing  dialogues  and  direction.  I  know  lot  of  people  who  are  fed  up  with  the  long  drawn  story  and  how  the  evil  characters  manage  to  get  away  every  time.  But  then,  its  easier  to  forgive  (the  writer  !)  for  all  those  (unnecessary)  scenes  if  you  know  what  exactly  you  want  to  see.  Cause  all  the  drama  all  around  actually  work  to  enhance  the  romance  which  the  brief  interludes  offer.

It  took  me  a  good  2  hours  to  find  out  the  name  of  the  actress  playing  Protima  Roychoudhury,  the  mother -  "Aparajita  Adhya."  She  is  awesome  in  her  portrayal  of  this  character.

And  so,  thanks  to  one  episode,  I  now  spend  much  of  my  waking  time  conjuring  sequences  of  how  they  can  make  up.  And  be  together.  And  like  all  fairy  tales,  how    "They  lived  happily  ever  after."

What is that which gives me a high?

I remember the first time I felt that emotion.. I had gone to Chandigarh for an audit. After a hard day's work, we were standing in the garden of the guest house, chatting. It was still evening and the sky was a light blue with white clouds. Suddenly, there was a moment of peace within me. My heart felt lighter. A feeling of complete contentment swept over me. I was happy, content and peaceful. I don't know why. Nothing had suddenly happened out of the way. I hadn't had any fight with anyone which suddenly got resolved. Nothing untoward had happened. But that feeling of light heartedness and happiness had come to me in a wave; like a giant Tsunami of happiness which swept past me and bowled me over.

This was in 1998 or 99. Almost 15 years ago.

And it happened once more around 7-8 years ago. This time, I don't remember the setting or when or how. I just remember thinking at that point; that I have felt this way earlier. In Chandigarh. And I'm happy and content again.

It's not happened again. Sometimes I find myself standing still in a similar environment of white clouds drifting in a peaceful blue sky and waiting for that wave to find me and drench me. I wait and think but it doesn't come. I know I can't grab it. It has to come on it's own; maybe in a different setting. Maybe when I'm not prepared for it. Or expecting it. And this time, I want to capture every moment of it and record it in my memory. Not like the second time when I all I remember now is that it did come.

Is it important? It's not that I'm not happy or content otherwise. It's not that I don't smile or laugh. But what was special in that wave? Why do I still remember it and long for it?

And why is the colour of the sky still so vividly imprinted in my mind?

Freedom of a woman to live life without fear .....

On  one  side,  we  are  celebrating  India  winning  6  Olympic  medals  for  the  1st  time  in  history.  On  the  same  front  page  of  the  newspaper,  is  the  horrifying  story  of  a  woman  (Pallavi  Purakayastha,  Mumbai,  August  10th),  murdered  inside  her  own  house  because  she  resisted  rape  by  the  watchman.

I'd  taken  advantage  of  the  3  day  long  weekend  starting  with  Janmashtami  and  was  out  of  touch  with  all  news.  It  was  only  this  morning  that  I  managed  to   read  all  the  news  of  the  past  few  days.  Yes,  I  am  happy  for  Sushil  Kumar  and  wholeheartedly  agree  that  he  would  have  won  the  gold  had  he  not  been  physically  unwell.  But  after  reading  the  story  on  the  brutal  murder  of  Pallavi,  the  joy  in  my  heart  at  Sushil's  win  has  been  snuffed  out.

True,  both  are  unrelated.  But  is  the  loss  of  a  life  in  its  prime,  not  to  be  treated  as  a  matter  of  national  importance?  What  will  happen  to  this  story?  The  newspapers  covered  it  for  a  day  or  two;  the  watchman  has  confessed;  a  trial  will  commence  and  drag  along  for  a  few  years.  There  will  no  doubt  be  a  lawyer  for  the  watchman  who  will  try  and  prove  that  Pallavi  was  solely  to  blame;  maybe  she  wore  clothes  which  incited  the  watchman  to  "lust"  for  her.  Or  maybe  not.  Since  the  watchman  is  not  the  son  of  a  politician  or  is  not  an  actor,  he  may  be  handed  over  a  lifetime  imprisonment  sentence  in  a  couple  of  years.  The  end.

That  is  really  the  end?  That  is  all  we  can  do  to  a  rapist?

I  cannot  but  think  of  Pallavi's  parents;  what  must  they  be  going  through  now?  When  a  child  is  conceived,  when  a  mother  feels  her  child  kick  inside  her  womb  for  the  first  time,  when  the  child  is  born  and  the  parents  hold  their  child  for  the  first  time,  and  then  the  child  slowly  sits  up...the  first  baby  steps...the  first  sentences …  school .....  graduation ….. job ....  and  then…..?  Parents  have  to  live  through  this  too?  Attempted  rape  and  murder  of  that  child,  whose  each  moment  of  life  they  rejoiced  and  celebrated?

No,  this  cannot  be  the  answer.  Our  country  has  to  have  an  answer.  I  do  not  care  if  this  gruesome  act  happens  in  other  countries  too;  we  want  a  solution  here.  In  a  country  where  majority  of  the  population  worships  Maa  Durga  in  various  forms  throughout  the  year.

There  has  to  be  fear  in  the  mind  of  every  person  who  even  contemplates  this  gruesome  act.  I  am  not  suggesting  capital  punishment,  though  in  this  case,  a  public  hanging  would  be  in  order.  But  an  immediate  punishment  is  sorely  required.    I  would  advocate

1)  Surgical / chemical  castration
2)  Within  3  days  of  the  act
3)  No  trial

Is  anyone  listening?

I  doubt.  It  is  only  the  immediate  family  of  the  victim  who  are  truly  affected.  I  do  not  know  if  Pallavi  had  any  siblings;  if  not,  the  parents  would  most  likely  be  feeling  why  could  they  not  have  died  in  Pallavi’s  place?  Or  what  had  they  done  to  deserve  this  fate?

What  will  it  take  for  a  law  like  this  to  come  into  force  in  our  country?  The  country  came  together  and  fought  for  Jessica  Lall.  Can  the  country  come  together  and  fight  for  the  RIGHT  to  LIVE,  of  every  woman  in  this  country,  WITHOUT  THE  FEAR  OF  RAPE?

Or  is  it  too  much  to  ask  for?

Lalita

The Essence and the Necessity of Passion in everything that we see or do

Just  wondering.....

Was  it  not  possible  for  the  mature,  warm  love  story  of  Ram  and  Sakshi  in  Bade  Acche  Lagte  Hain  to  continue  in  the  following  manner  post  their  consummation  and  post  Daadi's  directive  to  them  to  start  their  own  family....?

Ram  determined  not  to  take  Daadi's  advice,  being  far  too  possessive  about  Priya  to  want  to  share  her  with  anyone  else.  And  also  paranoid  about  the  age  gap.  They  could  have  been  shown  fighting  over  this  issue  for  many  weeks  with  hilarious  episodes  on  Ram  caught  in  a  dilemma  between  his  natural  inclination  to  be  as  physically  close  to  his  wife  as  possible  and  fear  of  a  baby  resulting  from  their  passion.

Vikram  to  get  more  and  more  involved  in  Harry's  office.  Neha's  jealous  bone  to  tickle  her  and  make  her  uncomfortable  and  unreasonable  enough  to  walk  off  to  her  mom's  place  during  vacations  leaving  the  three  kids  at  KM.  RaYa  to  tend  to  the  kids.  Ram,  though  enoying  the  days  spent  with  the  kids   still  not   comfortable  with  the  thought  of  his  own  offsprings.  And  then  Priya  to  realise  she  was  pregnant  but  unable  to  share  the  happiness  with  Ram.  Sakshi  would  have  emoted  that  so  beautifully.

Niharika  would  soon  realise   Priya  was  pregnant  and  also  be aware of  Ram's  ignorance  of  the  issue.  She  could  have  been  shown  plotting  against  Priya  and  trying  to  execute  one  of  her  innumerable  weird  plans;  lovable  to  the  viewers  because  none  of  the  plans  ever  gave  her  the  results  she  desired.  Maybe  making  RaYa  sit  with  her  and  watch  films  which  subtly  showed  how  kids  torment  their  parents  etc  with  Ram  falling  into  the  trap  and  applauding  his  decision  to  Priya  at  night.  More  and  more  of  such  incidents/acts  by  Niharika  and  right  upto  the  extent  of  trying  to  trip  Priya  down  the  stairs  and  make  her  suffer  a  miscarriage.  We  could  have  had  a  scene  of  Ram , as  an  action  hero,  take  a  flying  leap  from  the  stairs  to  try  and  catch  Priya  midway  and  break  her  fall;  and  in  the  process,  dislocate  a  few  bones  in  his  body.  Ram  in  hospital  thereafter;  next  to  a  children's  ward.  As  soon  as  allowed,  start  to  walk  around  and  then  somehow  with  nothing  better  to  do,  end  up  staring  for  hours  through  the  glass  doors  into  the  incubator  where  babies  were  placed  for  a  day  or  two  after  birth.  That  could  have  been  the  turning  point  in  his  life,  with  respect  to  babies,  when  he  saw  the  faces  of  the  new  parents  outside  the  door,  peering  into  the  wards  and  adoringly  looking  at  their  offspring.  And  then  after  his  return  back  home,  unable  to  admit  to  Priya  that  he'd  changed  his  mind  but  trying  his  best  to  achieve  what  he  wanted.  Priya,  in  a  different  physical  and  mental  frame  of  mind,  not  agreeable  and  mental  tension  between  the  two,  dragging  for  a  long  time.  And  finally,  unable  to  withstand  the  differences  between  them,  Ram  blurting  out  the  truth  to  Sakshi  and  then  her  revealing  that  she  was  already  three  months  pregnant.

A  simultaneous  track  of  resolving  differences  between  Vikram  and  Neha  could  also  have  continued.  It  is  but  natural  that  people  who  spend  long  hours  with  each  other  throughout  the  day  get  attracted  to  each  other.  This  happens  everywhere,  be  it  in  offices,  or  in  the  film  or  television  industry  etc.  This  track  could  have  been  developed  so  well,  with  psychiatric  insight  into  how  a  loving  couple  could  get  estranged  through  such  happenings  even  without  deliberate  fault;  for  example  even  without  mental  involvement  of  Vikram  in  this  case.  In  some  cases,  these  may  be  cases  of  love,  in  the  true  sense  of  the  word  but  in  most  cases  they  may  be  pure  infatuation.  We  adore  Jai  and  Tarana  and  I'm  so  sure  that  they  would  have  done  full  justice  to  this  track.  If  supported  by  mature  dialogues,  this  could  have  become  an  important  track  and  actually  connected  to  and  helped  people  watching  the  show.

Ram  taking  care  of  Sakshi  throughout  the  pregnancy  would  have  been  a  visual  delight.  Maybe  we  could  have  been  scared  by  problems  related  to  slightly  later  age  pregnancies  and  had  a  drama  during  the  delivery  with  doctors  saying  that  had  to  choose  between  mother  and  child.  Ram  and  Priya  continuing  their  trademark  fights  even  in  the  delivery  room  over   whose  life  was  more  important.  The  "look"  which  Sakshi  described  in  KBC...  I  can  imagine  her  lying  on  the  bed  in  the  hospital  and  trying  to  silence  Ram  with  that  "look"  after  he'd  told  the  doctor  that  he  wanted  Priya  to  survive  at  any  cost.

And  then  the  baby  coming  home.  A  baby  girl  whom  Ram  would  have  been  in  love  with  from  the  first  second  of  her  life.  This  may  have  helped  a  teeny  bit  in  reducing  female  foeticide  in  the  country  in  the  favourite  TRP  generating  rural  areas,  by  showing  a  super  successful  businessman  not  at  all  worried  about  not  having  a  direct  male  child  to  take  over  his  business.  We  could  have  seen  cute  scenes  of  Ram  explaining  management  theories  to  his  daughter  whilst  rocking  her  to  sleep;  after  Priya  having  expressly  forbidden  him  to  sing  to  her.  I  can  imagine  Sakshi  trying  to  explain  tactfully  to  Ram  why  his  singing  lullabies  might  not  be  the  best  way  of  making  his  daughter  sleep.  Maybe  another  social  message  to  the  rurals,  emphasising  the  importance  of  regular  injections  and  checkups  of  infants  in  the  first  year  of  her  life.  Maybe  even  a  cameo  by  Amitabh  Bachchan  as  part  of  his  “eradicate  polio”  campaign  in  India  with  which  he’s  already  involved.

And  for  unknown  reasons,  after  a  year,  the  baby  getting  very  attached  to  Niharika  and  always  wanting  to  climb  up  on  her  lap.  Niharika  picking  up  and  cuddling  the  baby,  in  Ram’s  presence  and  putting  her  down  when  Ram  looked  away.  But  the  baby  persisting  and  gradually  winning  over  Niharika  too,  unknown  to  the  evil  lady  herself.  And  finally  one  day  the  baby  howling  after  an  injection,  and  Niharika  barging  into  the  room  to  pick  her  up  and  comfort  her.  It  would  have  been  such  a  sweet  way  of  showing  a  die  hard  materialistic  person,  having  subconsciously  changed  as  a  result  of  Ram’s  love  and  respect  over  the  years,  and  now  finally  getting  her  maternal  instincts  back  on  track  after  bonding  with  a  baby.  Niharika  slowly  confessing  to  Ram  and  helping  him  reunite  with  his  Krishnaji.  That  could  have  been  a  pretty  long  track  too,  with  Niharika  wondering  how  to  confess  without  involving  Sid.  Vestiges  of  her  earlier  mindset  interfering  with  her  changed  image  and  her  constant  dilemma.  There  was  so  much  scope  for  Eva  in  BALH.  Maybe  Ishika  could  have  got  a  bigger  role  with  a  lot  of  emotional  scenes  between  mother  and  daughter,  trying  to  figure  out  what  was  wrong  and  what  was  right.  Sid  could  have  remained  the  black  sheep;  leaving  scope  for  further  bits  of  drama  in  between.  We  don’t  always  need  drama  for  evil  to  turn  into  good.  Sometimes  all  it  takes  is  a  second,  with  an  innocent  baby,  showing  us  that  the  world  is  really  a  beautiful  place.  And  the  characters  in  this  soap  would  remained  like  an  extension  of  our  own  families  with  all  of  us  having  actually  connected  with  most  of  the  players,  in  our  own  ways.

This  is  just  one  of  the  innumerable  ideas  all  ardent  BALH  fans  must  be  thinking  of.  Was  there  really  no  other  way  forward  other  than  the  melodrama,  the  separation  and  the  leap?  Did  not  a  TRP  of  3.8  in  the  week  in  which  we  got  only  cute  scenes  between  the  lead  pair  manage  to  convince  the  makers  that  100%  of  people  watching  the  serial,  whether  located  in  urban  areas  or  rural,  whether  having  access  to  the  internet  or  not,  prefer  to  watch  two  people  totally  in  love;  rather  than  meaningless  drama?

We  now  feel  vindicated.  Victimised.  With  no  one  to  blame.  No  one  forced  us  to  fall  in  love  with  Ram  and  Sakshi.  We  did  that  on  our  own.  And  now  we  must  suffer  the  consequences  of  our  own  folly.

Most  of  us  will  still  follow  the  soap.  Maybe  I  will  too,  after  this  initial  disappointment  wears  off  in  a  fortnight  or  so,  not  only  to  see  Ram  and  Sakshi,  the  individuals,  but  also  to  see  how  the  serial  will  actually  progress.  But  here,  and  I  think  I  speak  for  all  of  us  twitter  and  facebook  users,  that  there'll  be  a  difference  in  the  way  we  watch;  a  difference  in  our  mindset  when  we  watch.  The  euphoria  of  a  Monday  Morning  to  working  people ... just  because  we  would  get  to  see  BALH  in  the  evening  for  21  minutes;  dreading  Fridays  with  no  BALH  telecast,  wishing  weekends  would  pass  by  in  a  hurry;  connecting  with  so  many  more  ardent  fans  and  realising  that  we  were  not  the  only  afflicted  people,  learning  new  technologies,  including  downloading  real  player  and  what  not  and  saving  RaYa  scenes  in  an  already  overloaded  hard  disk,  smiling  to  ourselves  sitting  alone  whilst  recollecting  special  scenes  and  blessing  the  producer  and  the  production  teams  for  giving  this  to  us.  Spending  precious  time  on  deliberating  on  each  scene  and  each  "look".  Till  a  year  back,  I  used  to  be  a  firm  believer  of  the  adage  that  it  was  better  spending  time  with  real  friends  rather  than  online  friends  but  BALH  changed  so  many  of  my  fixed   age  old  ideas.  Suddenly,  discussing  and  goofing  about  a  BALH  episode  seemed  the  most  productive  way  one  could  spend  time  as  it  led  to  a  happy  mind  which  was  a  predominant  requirement  to  keep  one's  family  and  home  and  surroundings  happy.  If  you're  happy,  the  world  is  happy.

I  would  say  this  is  the  height  of  creativity,  when  something  you  produce  touches  the  heart  and  mind  of  people  in  such  a  way  so  as  to  make  them  believe  in  it.  Believe  that  Ram  and  Sakshi  were  actually  meant  to  be  together  always  and  damn  Niharika  and  the  rest  of  her  gang  who  tried  to  drive  them  apart.

I  know  the  TRPs  may  stay  at  the  same  position  it  is  now;  TRPs  would  not  be  able  to  measure  the  change  in  the  euphoria  levels,  the  adrenalin  levels  pumping  at  10.30  pm  a  year  back  and  today.  Maybe  someone  should  make  that  an  integral  part  of  the  TRP  mapping  process.  That  would  actually  help  the  producer  to  understand  the  difference  between  how  we  watched  earlier  and  how  we  watch  now.  That  kind  of  mapping  would  bring  out  our  disappointment  levels  and  crashing  of  faith.

Is  there  still  chance?  Is  there  still  a  way  that  the  production  teams  gloss  over  the  sheer  nonsense  we've  seen  over  the  last  two  months  now  and  post  leap  try  and  create  magic  again?  But  with  a  promise  this  time .... to  do  the  best  they  can;  and  for  the  period  they  can.  And  end  it  when  they  think  they  can’t,  any  more.  And  follow  Aamir's  advice  in  3  Idiots;  do  your  best.  Create  the  best  serial  you  can.  Think  deeply  about  what  and  how  to  show  in  the  21  minutes  each  day  in  the  4  day  week.  Make  every  second  of  those  precious  21  minutes  count.  And  don’t  think  of  the  TRPs  and  what  you  must  show  to  get  the  TRPs.  If  you  do  your  best,  TRPs  jhak  maarke  aayega.

Too  emotional?  Yes,  but  cannot  help  it.  A  wednesday  evening  and  I  haven't  voluntarily  seen  BALH  for  the  last  2  days.  And  I  have  no  clue  when  I'll  get  back.  That  makes  me  sad.  And  that  also  makes  me  emotional.

BAHL : Lalita's take : Post the Leap Promo 28th May

Chapter 1

The  party  was  over.  Priya  lost  to  Niharika.  Even  in  their  wildest  dreams,  Priya,  Neha  and  Vikram  could  not  have  imagined  that  Jayesh  would  sell  out  in  this  manner.  Vikram  felt  like  kicking  himself  for  not  warning  the  bank  manager  not  to  divulge  details  of  Priya’s  bank  account  to  anyone.  Once  Shiney  got  details  of  the  transfer,  it  was  easy  play  for  Niharika  thereafter.  She  had  been  ahead  of  them  in  every  move.

The  three  of  them  were  sitting  in  Vikram’s  house  the  morning  after.  After  the  huge  showdown,  Priya  had  not  returned  to  Kapoor  Mansion.  She  had  been  feeling  physically  unwell  as  well  and  had  preferred  the  relative  formality  of  Neha’s  house  to  the  stifling,  overbearing  atmosphere  that  would  have  prevailed  in  Sharma  House.  Going  back  to  Kapoor  Mansion  ,  she  had  not  even  considered.

Neha  :  Priya,  I  think  you  should  rest  for  some  time  more.  You  still  look  very  weak.

Priya  :  Nahin  Neha.  I’m  fine.  This  is  decision  time  for  me  now.  And  Vikram,  I’m  sorry.  I  know  this  entire  episode  will  make  it  difficult  for  you  to  return  to  Kapoor  Industries.

Vikram  :  Priya,  that  should  be  the  last  thing  for  you  to  worry  about  now?  Yes,  it’s  true  I  cannot  go  back  but  I  am  more  unhappy  about  leaving  Ram  alone  once  again.

Neha  :  Priya,  last  time  during  the  necklace  incident,  I’d  thought  Vikram  would  never  work  with  Ram  again.  Would  never  speak  to  him  again.  But  their  friendship  is  so  strong  that  I  am  sanguine  Niharika  would  never  be  able  to  break  it.  Fingers  crossed,  Priya  but  after  a  few  weeks,  things  will  get  back  to  normal.  And  maybe  the  situation  would  be  a  bit  better   now  that  Ram  knows  Sid  and  Ishika  are  not  Lalaji’s  children.  Don’t  worry  about  Vikram.

Vikram  :  Neha’s  right,  Priya.  I’m  more  worried  about  what  to  tell  Krishuji.  None  of  us  have  picked  up  her  calls  from  last  night.  She’s  too  intelligent  and  would  have  guessed  that  something  went  majorly  wrong.

Neha  :  Priya,  wait,  I’ll  get  some  adrak  wali  chai  for  you.  You’re  still  looking…….

Priya  :  No  Neha.  I  don’t  want  tea  now.  I’ve  actually  taken  a  decision  and  Neha’s  words  have  convinced  me  that  my  decision  is  correct.

Vikram  :  What  kind  of  decision  Priya?

Priya  :  I’ll  file  for  divorce.  But  I  won’t  ask  for  any  money.  Now  our  earlier  plan  of  trying  to  save  Ram’s  property  by  way  of  a  divorce  would  be  a  farce  after  the  drama  yesterday.   I’ll  not  go  back  to  Sharma  House  either  and  will  stay  with  Ma  (Krishnaji).  She  had  refused  to  come  back;  I  forced  her  to;  with  a  lot  of  untruths  and  now  I  cannot  let  her  go  back  alone,  defeated  once  again.  She’s  a  very  strong  woman  but  this  will  break  her  up  totally.  I  still  don’t  regret  that  I  tried  to  fight  Niharika.  I’m  glad  I  took  this  step.  At  least  I  will  never  repent  for  not  trying  my  best.  And  I  think  Krishuji  will  need  me  now.

Neha  :  But  at  the  cost  of  your  marriage?

Priya  :  Do  you  think  Niharika  would  have  allowed  our  marriage  to  survive?

Vikram  :  Priya,  but  this  is  not  the  way  out  either.    You……

Priya  :  Vikram,  please  let  me  finish.  This  is  my  decision  and  please  let  me  explain  why
Neha  has  helped  me  to  realise  how  correct  this  is.

Neha:  How?

Priya  :  Recall  how  you  described  Vikram  and  Ram’s  relationship.  That  within  a  few  weeks,  they’ll  be  able  to  deal  with  each  other  again,  in  a  manner  as  if  there  had  been  no  break  between  them.    If  my  relationship  with  Mr.Kapoor  has  to  survive,  it  has  to  be  like  that.  And  I  have  faith  on  him,  on  myself,  on  our  rishta.  Signing  on  a  divorce  paper  will  not  break  this  attachment.  But  I  would  prefer  to  keep  the  faith  that  one  day,  we  will  be  together  again.  In  a  Niharika  free  world.

Vikram  :  Kaash  aisa  hi  ho  Priya.  But  Krishuji  lost  out  on  20  years  of  her  life  with  her  son.  Aren’t  you  afraid  to  take  the  risk?

Priya  :  No  Vikram.  This  is  not  the  time  for  me  to  be  afraid.  I  cannot  be.  I  don’t  know  how  long  the  break  will  be;  but  there  will  be  an  end  to it.  I  cannot  plan  and  plot  and  exist  day  after  day  in  fear.  I  tried  once  against  Niharika  and  failed.  I  don’t  regret  it  but  now  I  wish  to  travel  the  path  which  is  more  familiar  to  me.  Of  peace  and  tranquillity  and  self  respect.    And  faith.

Neha:  Without  love?

Priya,  softly  :  He’ll  always  be  there  in  my  heart. In  every  moment  of  my  life.

Priya  helped  Krishaji  to  complete  her  packing.  The  latter  was  too  shocked  with  whatever  Priya  told  her  and  she  knew  she  would  not  be  able  to  change  Priya’s  decision  to  go  away  with  her.  Her  daughter-in-law  was  a  woman  after  her  own  heart.  Ram  was  indeed  cursed  that  he  was  allowing  such  a  woman  to  move  out  from  his  life.

Priya  had  signed  the  divorce  papers  which  Vikram  had  prepared.  A  tear  drop  had  fallen  on  one  side  and  a  few  words  got  blurred.  Priya  didn’t  notice.  She  handed  over  the  papers  to  Neha  who  had  just  come  in.

Neha  :  Vikram  has  gone  directly  to  the  airport.  I  need  to  pick  up  the  kids  from  school  ;  so  I’m  sorry  I  will  not  be  able  to  come  with  you  to  the  airport.

Priya  :  Kaisi  baatein  kar  rahi  ho  Neha?  Tum  jaldi  jao  ….  Don’t  keep  the  kids  waiting.  And  give  my  love  to  them.  But  mind  you,  tumhe  meri  kasam;  you  will  never  divulge  my  whereabouts  to  Mr.  Kapoor.

Neha  :  Haan  Priya,  maine  toh  promise  kiya  hai  …  but  what  about  your  family?

KK  :  Priya’s  told  only  her  father  and  sworn  him  to  secrecy  as  well.  Sudhirji  will  not  let  even  Shipraji  know.  However  he’s  made  her  promise  to  call  him  at  least  once  every  month.

KK  locked  the  doors.  This  time  she  had  been  hopeful  that  maybe  everything  would  be  sorted  out.  But  maybe  God  would  test  her  for  some  more  time.  She  did  not  bear  a  grudge  against  God  but  only  prayed  that  she  be  able  to  clasp  Ram  to  herself  and  shower  him  with  all  her  pent  up  love,  in  her  lifetime  at  least.

----------------------------

They  had  collected  their  boarding  passes  and  were  waiting  for  the  boarding  announcement  when  Vikram  called  again.

Priya  :  Vikram,  don’t  worry  for  not  being  able  to  come.  You  can  never  trust  Mumbai  traffic  and  that  too  in  this  torrential  rain.  Everything  is  done.  We’ve  collected  our  boarding  passes,  the  flight  is  on  time  and  w…..

Vikram  :  Priya,  hold  on.  Stop.  Come  out.  We  need  to  talk.  You  cannot  go.

Priya  :  Vikram,  kya  ho  gaya?  I  have  to  g…

Vikram  :  Listen  to  me.  No  wait,  let  me  speak  to  Krishuji  for  a  moment.

Priya  handed  over  the  phone  to  Krishuji,  puzzled.

After  some  time,  Krishuji  handed  back  the  phone  to  Priya.  Priya  had  been  listening  to  krishuji’s  part  of  the  conversation  and  trying  to  read  her  expressions  but  she  did  not  get  any  clue.

KK  :  Priya,  tum  abhi  mere  saath  nahin  jaa  sakte  ho.  No,  wait,  let  me  finish.  Please  go  back.  There  has  been  a  development  which  Vikram  will  explain  to  you.  I  do  not  know  whether  it  is  for  good  or  bad  but  it  means  that  you  need  to  be  here  for  some  time  more.  Take  the  keys  of  my  house  here.  You  can  stay  there.  Vikram  will  meet  you  there  in  some  time. My  home  in  Australia  is  yours  too  and  I  would  love  you  to  come  back  to  me  there.  But  not  immediately.

Priya  :  Maa,

Boarding  announcement  for  their  flight  commenced.

KK  hugged  Priya,  took  her  boarding  pass  from  Priya  and  walked  towards  the  gate.  She  stopped  at  the  gate  for  a  moment  and  turned  back  to  wave.  Priya  had  tears  in  her  eyes.  She  was  seeing  Krishuji  in  front  of  her  but  was  remembering  the  night  when  Ram  had  waved,  exactly  in  that  manner,  when  he  was  leaving  for  his  US  trip.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Priya  lifted  the  covers  from  the  sofas  and  started  with  her  unpacking.  Vikram  would  be  coming  soon.  She  was  just  about  to  enter  the  kitchen  when  the  doorbell  rang.

Neha  :  Priya,  I’ve  left  the  kids  with  my  mother.  Something  has  happened  here.

Priya  :  What?

Vikram  :  Ram  has  gone.

Priya  :  Gone?  Meaning?  Gone  where?

Vikram  :  Wait.  Let  me  explain  all  I  know.  I  could  not  come  to  the  airport  because  the  senior  lawyer  of  Kapoor  Industries  had  called  me  urgently  to  office.

Last  night,  Ram  did  not  go  back  home  to  Kapoor  Mansion  from  Lalaji’s  Haveli.  He  was  in  office  all  night  with  Mr.  Salve,  the  lawyer.  Ram  has  split  Kapoor  Industries  into  7  parts.  One  part  to  Natasha  and  Kartik,  jointly,  two  parts  to  Niharika,  Sid  and  Ishika,  one  part  to  me  and  Neha  jointly,  one  part  to  Rishabh  and  two  parts  to  you.  Lalaji’s  Kothi  and  Kapoor  Mansion  both  go  to  Daadi  in  her  lifetime  and  after  her,  to  be  disposed  off  in  any  manner  dictated  by  her.  There  is  nothing  left  in  his  name.  He’s  gone  and  even  Mr.  Salve  does  not  know  where  he  is. And  he  has  left  this  note  for  you,  Priya.

Priya  took  the  note  but  was  too  shaken  up  to  open  it.  Tears  fell  down  her  face.  She  needed  support  and  Neha  quickly  made  her  sit  down.  Then  they  moved   away  to  allow  Priya  to  read  the  note  in  privacy.

Priya,

What  happened  a  few  hours  ago  was  something  I  never  dreamt  of  in  my  life.  I  worked  hard  for  my  family  all  these  years.  And  then  I  wanted  to  work  for  my  love.  I  don’t  know  what  went  wrong  and  why.  But  now  since  money  and  power  seem  to  be  all  that  everyone  wants,  I  think  it  is  time,  I  hand  over  everything  to  everyone.  To  manage  in  their  own  way  and  live  the  way  they  want  to.  I  am  leaving  two  parts  of  Kapoor  Industries  for  you.  Mr.  Salve  will  explain  which  are  the  companies  included  in  this  and  he  will  also  help  you  to  run  them,  till  the  time  you  need  help.  You  may  trust  him  completely.

I  am  leaving  now,  to  some  place  where  I  hope  to  get  some  peace.  This  was  there  in  my  list  of  things;  my  set  of  wishes.  Remember  that  list  I  tore  up  when  we  were  discussing  our  wishes  during  your  cancer  scare?

You  will  not  be  able  to  find  me  ever  again.  I  hope  you  get  what  you  want  in  life  and  you’re  really  and  truly  happy.  I  know  I  may  again  be  doing  a  big  mistake  in  not  trusting  you   …..  but  I’m  really  too  tired  to  think  of  who  is  right  and  who  is  wrong.  If  you  are  right,  then  a  lot  of  things  I  have  believed  over  so  many  years  would  be  proved  wrong.  And  if  you  are  wrong , ….  that  is  something    I  do  not  even  want  to  envisage.  The  truth  may  just  kill  me  and  I  prefer  to  remain  in  this  dilemma.

Yours,
Ram

P.S.  Though  I  don’t  need  to  say  it,  I  trust  you  will  take  care  of  Daadi.  You’re  the  only  one  she  has  faith  on,  after  me.

Priya   could  not  control  herself  any  more.  She  slid  to  the  ground  in a  dead  faint.
